What are the fundamental values?

Much is said about this centuries-old institution, yet beyond mystery Freemasonry rests first on a foundation of human and ethical values.

01

Liberty

The cornerstone. Freedom of thought, conscience and expression. It encourages each person to free themselves from dogma and prejudice.

02

Equality

In lodge, social, professional or religious distinctions fall away. All members regard one another as equals, labouring together at a common work.

03

Brotherhood

The powerful bond uniting members across borders. A commitment to solidarity, listening and mutual kindness.

04

The search for Truth

The Mason is an eternal apprentice, seeking self-improvement in order to serve society better, using reason and symbolism as tools of reflection.

05

Tolerance

Respect for the opinions of others is essential. Freemasonry aims to be a 'centre of union' where people who would otherwise have remained strangers may meet.

To be a Freemason is to seek to 'dress the rough ashlar' in order to build a more just and humane social edifice.
