An initiatory method

The path: dressing the rough ashlar

One does not join Freemasonry as one joins a club. Initiation is a beginning: a passage, then patient labour.

Three symbolic degrees

I

Entered Apprentice

A time of silence and observation. Learning to know oneself and to dress the rough ashlar: our tempers, prejudices and fears.

II

Fellow Craft

A time of travel and study. Opening the mind, deepening moral arts and sciences, joining inner work to the collective building.

III

Master Mason

A time of responsibility. To transmit, to watch, to build. The Master has not 'finished': he becomes an eternal apprentice, in service of lodge and city.

Rough ashlar and perfect ashlar

The builders' legend sets the rough stone — the person as they arrive — against the cubic stone, fit to take its place in the building. No one is perfect; the work is to dress without destroying, with the help of one's brethren.

Time and availability

Meetings are regular. The Craft asks for constancy more than brilliance. To apply is already to accept giving time, sincerity and one's word.
